Variety’s Education Impact Report Spotlights Innovation and Storytelling

The first of its kind, the institute offers hands-on training in all aspects of production so graduates can seamlessly transition onto soundstages and studios. “Authentic Native American representation has been close to nonexistent since Hollywood’s inception,” says Brettlyn Bevenue, program manager, Cherokee Film Institute.

“Our mission at CFI is to train, develop and elevate Native American and local talent to increase representation in film and media. We’ve seen a positive shift within the past decade and that conversation is how we begin our curriculum.” She notes that students get practical experience in the burgeoning Oklahoma production scene: “Our classes are held at the Cherokee Film Studios campus, so not only are students working with industry-standard technology, but they’re exposed to both practical production and virtual production on our soundstages.”
