Cherokee Nation partners with locally-owned Griffin Media to expand reach of OsiyoTV

TULSA, Okla. — Cherokee Nation is partnering with Griffin Media to expand access to its Emmy award-winning series Osiyo, Voices of the Cherokee People. Through compelling storytelling, the series provides an authentic perspective on the rich traditions and compelling modern advancements of the Cherokee people told through a documentary lens. Each 30-minute episode features an inside look at the compelling lives of three Cherokee Nation citizens. From Cherokee language and culture keepers living in the reservation to Cherokees living abroad, the show provides viewers with a diverse look at who Cherokee people are today.

Viewers can now enjoy the series every Sunday at 3 p.m. on both KQCW in Tulsa and KSBI in Oklahoma City.

Hosted and directed by Cherokee Nation citizen, filmmaker, Emmy Award-winning journalist and former anchor and reporter for Griffin Communications Jen Loren, the groundbreaking series has become one of the most recognized Native-produced television programs in the country.

“This partnership is an important example of what can happen when local organizations come together to support one another and find new opportunities to connect with audiences,” said Loren. “As the media landscape continues to change, we’re grateful for the opportunity to work with Griffin Media and continue sharing Cherokee stories with audiences across Oklahoma.”

Now in its 11th season, the show has produced more than 330 short documentaries. It has been nominated for more than 76 Heartland Emmys, winning 36.

“All of us at Oklahoma’s Own Griffin Media are proud to partner with the Cherokee Nation to air Osiyo, Voice of the Cherokee People on News On 6,” said Wade Deaver, president of Griffin Media. “This unique program is a perfect fit for our station and shares such an important story with Green Country.”

OsiyoTV is produced in Tulsa by Cherokee Film, which includes four distinct branches — Cherokee Film Productions, Cherokee Film Studios, Cherokee Film Commission and Cherokee Film Institute. Together, the branches work toward a shared goal of advancing narrative sovereignty while creating economic development within the Cherokee Nation Reservation.
